Ambrette Seeds: What They Are and What They Are Not

Ambrette seeds are a small, greyish, kidney-shaped seed with an odour somewhere between musk, brandy and warm skin, and they are one of the most persistently misnamed materials in the whole aromatics trade. The plant is Abelmoschus moschatus, a tropical mallow in the same genus as okra. It is also called musk mallow, which in Britain usually means a different plant altogether. It appears in older perfumery literature and in United States food law under two separate botanical synonyms. And it shares a name with a banned synthetic that is not made from it and never was. Four separate confusions, one seed. This article takes them in order.

A word on where we stand: we do not sell ambrette in any form. We sell one product, a cold-pressed Ethiopian black seed oil from an entirely unrelated plant. The reason we keep writing articles like this one is that our own seed is sold under at least five English names, and we have learnt what that costs a buyer.


The Short Answer

  • Ambrette seeds are the seeds of Abelmoschus moschatus Medik., an accepted species in the family Malvaceae, order Malvales, according to Kew's Plants of the World Online. Kew records its native range as tropical and subtropical Asia.
  • It sits in the same genus as okra, Abelmoschus esculentus. The two are genuine relatives, which is why an ambrette pod looks like a thin, bristly okra.
  • Kew treats Hibiscus abelmoschus L. as the basionym and a homotypic synonym. So does Hibiscus moschatus — which is the name United States food law still uses, listing "Ambrette (seed)" against "Hibiscus moschatus Moench." at 21 CFR 182.20.
  • Kew's common name for the plant is musk mallow. In British gardens and wildflower guides, musk mallow almost always means Malva moschata L., a separate accepted species. The common name points at two different plants.
  • Musk ambrette is not ambrette. It is a synthetic nitro-musk, 4-tert-butyl-3-methoxy-2,6-dinitrotoluene, and it is prohibited in cosmetic products in Great Britain under entry 414 of Annex II to assimilated Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Neither Abelmoschus moschatus nor Hibiscus abelmoschus appears anywhere in that Annex.
  • The seed's odour chemistry is well described. A 2014 analysis in Molecules identified 35 compounds in ambrette seed oil, dominated by farnesol acetate at 51.45% and the macrocyclic musk lactone ambrettolide at 12.96%.
  • We searched Europe PMC for clinical trials indexed against Abelmoschus moschatus and found none. Sidr & Stone publishes a per-batch thymoquinone figure of 2.67% for its own oil, verified by Analytice, an ISO-accredited French laboratory — and we would apply the same standard of evidence to any claim made about this seed.

What Ambrette Seeds Actually Are

The plant is an annual or soft shrub, bristly-stemmed, with lobed leaves and a pale yellow five-petalled flower carrying a deep maroon throat. It was formally published by Medikus in Malvenfamilie in 1787, and Kew's Plants of the World Online lists Abelmoschus moschatus Medik. as the accepted name, in Malvaceae, with two accepted subspecies: subsp. moschatus and subsp. biakensis. Kew records the native range as tropical and subtropical Asia; the plant is now grown or naturalised widely across Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific and parts of the Americas.

The seed forms inside an elongated, ridged, bristly capsule that is unmistakably a relative of okra, and that is not a coincidence: okra is Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench, an accepted species in the same genus. If you have ever split an okra pod and found neat rows of round pale seeds, you have seen the same architecture. Ambrette's version is narrower, drier and packed with small greyish-brown seeds shaped like a kidney.

The naming trouble starts immediately. Here is every name you are likely to meet, and what each actually refers to.

The Musk Mallow Problem: One English Name, Two Unrelated Garden Plants

If you type musk mallow into a British search engine you will mostly be shown a hardy herbaceous perennial with pale pink, deeply cut flowers that grows happily in a cottage border and self-seeds along hedgerows. That plant is Malva moschata L., and Kew lists it as an accepted species in its own right. It is in the same family as ambrette — Malvaceae is a large family — but it is a different genus, a different plant, and it produces nothing that anyone perfumes with.

Ambrette is a frost-tender tropical annual with yellow flowers. Malva moschata is a temperate perennial with pink ones. They share a common name because both were noticed to smell faintly musky, and English common names have never been under any obligation to be useful.

The practical consequence is a purchasing one. Seed sold as "musk mallow" in a British garden catalogue is almost certainly Malva moschata. If you want the aromatic seed, the listing needs to say Abelmoschus moschatus, or ambrette, or one of the Indian names — latakasturi, kasturi dana or musk seed — and ideally the botanical name alongside. Musk Ambrette Is Not Ambrette, and It Is Banned From Cosmetics

This is the confusion that actually matters, because getting it backwards leads people to avoid a perfectly ordinary botanical material, or — worse — to assume a banned synthetic is a natural one.

Musk ambrette is a synthetic compound: 4-tert-butyl-3-methoxy-2,6-dinitrotoluene, CAS 83-66-9, EC number 201-493-7. It belongs to the nitro-musk family, a group of aromatic nitro compounds developed from the late nineteenth century onwards as cheap substitutes for natural musks. It was named after ambrette seed because it was made to smell like it. It has no botanical content whatsoever.

It is also prohibited. Musk ambrette appears as entry 414 in Annex II to assimilated Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products — the list of substances that must not form part of the composition of cosmetic products — as published on legislation.gov.uk. We checked the same Annex for the plant, and neither Abelmoschus moschatus nor Hibiscus abelmoschus nor Hibiscus moschatus appears anywhere in it.

So the two materials sit in opposite regulatory places despite sharing five letters.

If you read a headline about musk ambrette being restricted and assumed it was about the seed, it was not. If you read a perfumery listing offering "musk ambrette" as a natural material, treat that listing with suspicion — the name belongs to the synthetic.

What Is In the Seed, and What It Smells Of

The odour is the reason anyone bothers with ambrette, and unusually for a traditional aromatic, its chemistry is well described.

Arokiyaraj and colleagues ran a gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of ambrette seed oil and identified 35 compounds, of which the two largest were farnesol acetate at 51.45% and ambrettolide at 12.96% (Arokiyaraj S et al., Molecules 2014;20(1):384–395; PMID 25551188). Ambrettolide is a macrocyclic lactone and it is the compound that carries the musk note. It is worth saying clearly that the same paper's antibacterial work was a laboratory well-diffusion assay — in vitro only, on cultured bacteria, with no animal or human component — and it is not evidence about anything you might do with the seed.

The rest of the smell is more complicated than "musk". Du, Clery and Hammond examined the basic fraction of a carbon dioxide extract of ambrette seeds and reported 58 nitrogen-containing compounds, including 27 pyrazine derivatives, 12 pyridines and seven thiazoles, all reported for the first time in the seed (Du Z, Clery RA, Hammond CJ. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry 2008;56(16):7388–7392; PMID 18656937). Pyrazines are the compounds that make roasted things smell roasted. That is where ambrette's distinctive nutty, brandy-like, faintly toasted quality underneath the musk comes from.

Three different materials are sold from these seeds and they are not interchangeable. A cold-pressed or steam-distilled seed oil, a concrete and absolute made with solvent, and a supercritical carbon dioxide extract all smell recognisably of ambrette but differ substantially in what they carry over. What the Evidence Does and Does Not Cover

Ambrette collects traditional-medicine claims, mostly borrowed from Ayurvedic and Unani writing where the seed appears as latakasturi. Those traditions are old and culturally serious, and we are not going to dress them up as clinical findings, because they are not.

The indexed literature on Abelmoschus moschatus runs to roughly five hundred records. Read through it and the shape is consistent: plant science, essential-oil chemistry, cell-culture work and rodent models. We searched Europe PMC for records indexed against the species with the publication types "Clinical Trial" or "Randomized Controlled Trial" and it returned nothing at all.

There is one apparent exception, and it is instructive, because it is another naming problem.

That third row is worth dwelling on. Abelmoschus manihot is an accepted species in its own right per Kew, and the Chinese herbal capsule usually written in English as Huangkui is consistently described elsewhere in the literature as being derived from it. A review indexed against A. moschatus that pools trials of that product is not evidence about ambrette seed, whatever the index says. Three Objections Worth Taking Seriously

"Isn't all this synonym-chasing just pedantry?" It would be, if the names all pointed at the same thing. They do not. Musk mallow will get you a pink perennial for a border. Musk ambrette will get you a substance banned from cosmetics in Great Britain. Abelmoschus manihot will get you a different medicinal plant with a substantial Chinese clinical literature attached to it. Only one of the names on that list gets you ambrette seed, and the difference between them is the difference between buying what you meant to buy and not.

"Ambrette has been used for centuries — doesn't that count as evidence?" It counts as strong evidence that the material is available, tolerable and valued, which is genuinely worth something. It does not count as evidence for any specific claim about what it does in a body. Those are different questions and long use answers only the first. We take exactly the same line about the seed we do sell, and about the hadith literature that surrounds it: tradition is not a substitute for a measurement, and treating it as one does the tradition no favours.

"Why would a black seed oil company write about a mallow?" Because the problem is the same problem. Our own seed is sold as black seed, black cumin, kalonji, habbatus sauda and nigella, and at least two of those names also belong to other plants. We have had to become careful about botanical names to describe our own product honestly, and the tools transfer. Ambrette is a good example of how much work a name quietly does. The seed itself is straightforward: a tropical mallow, closely related to okra, producing a bristly pod full of small grey seeds that smell of musk and toasted nuts because of a macrocyclic lactone and a crowd of pyrazines. Everything difficult about the subject is vocabulary.

So the useful checks are all naming checks. Confirm the botanical name is Abelmoschus moschatus, and not Malva moschata and not Abelmoschus manihot. Confirm you are being offered plant material and not the synthetic that borrowed its name. Confirm which extract you are buying, because a pressed oil, an absolute and a carbon dioxide extract are three different products. And treat any health claim attached to the seed as unevidenced until somebody shows you a trial, because as far as the indexed literature goes there is not one.
