If you have searched for black seed oil and parasites, you have probably met two things at once: a promise about a "parasite cleanse", and the claim that black seed oil outperformed ivermectin. Both deserve a careful look rather than a quick answer. We swept the published literature for Nigella sativa and thymoquinone against giardia, blastocystis, schistosoma, helminths, ascaris, hookworm and entamoeba, and the honest finding is worth putting at the top rather than burying at the bottom: there is no human interventional trial. Every study we could find ran in broiler chickens, donkeys, calves or mice. That does not make the work uninteresting. It does mean nobody has tested this in a person.

The Short Answer

What a "Parasite Cleanse" Means — and What It Doesn't

At day 28 they measured faecal egg count reduction.
The numbers are real. What they describe is a veterinary anthelmintic trial in poultry — a different species, a different parasite burden, a different preparation and a different route from anything a person would do at home. It is not a comparison between black seed oil and a human medicine, and it should not be read as one.

What the Rest of the Research Actually Measured
The chicken study is not an outlier. It is representative. When we searched Europe PMC across the main parasite groups people ask about, every result returned an animal model or a laboratory preparation. Ali M and colleagues (Acta Biologica Hungarica 2016;67(3):247–60, PMID 27630048) gave Nigella sativa oil orally to mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni and reported reduced worm burden and egg deposition; the paper is indexed under mouse disease models, and a reduction in a mouse's worm burden tells us nothing about what happens in a person. Yahia SH and colleagues (Journal of Parasitic Diseases 2023;47(2):329–339, PMID 37193490) worked in mice with cryptosporidiosis. Shakeri F and colleagues (Avicenna Journal of Phytomedicine 2016;6(1):9–20, PMID 27247918) is a narrative review of gastrointestinal effects, not a trial at all.

This is the pattern the marketing quietly drops. A finding is generated in a controlled animal experiment, at a dose and preparation set by the researchers, and is then restated online as though it described a human outcome. Reading the species line of a study is the single most useful habit a sceptical reader can build.

How Strong Is the Evidence Base, Overall?
It is fair to ask whether the parasite question is unusually thin or whether it reflects the field. The honest answer is that the wider black seed oil literature is more mixed than its reputation suggests. Li Z and colleagues (Frontiers in Nutrition 2023;10:1107750, PMID 37057067) ran an umbrella review of twenty meta-analyses covering 110 outcome measures and graded 88 of them very low certainty, 17 low and only 5 moderate. Hallajzadeh J and colleagues (Phytotherapy Research 2020;34(10):2586–2608, PMID 32394508) pooled fifty randomised trials of inflammatory and oxidative markers and returned null results across the board.
There is a second, more practical problem: the bottles themselves vary enormously. Khaikin E and colleagues (Nutrients 2022;14(17):3501, PMID 36079759) measured eleven commercial products and found thymoquinone ranging from 3.08 to 809.4 mg per 100 g — a spread of more than two hundred-fold between the weakest and the strongest.

Start with your GP.
