Black Seed Vitamins: What Nigella Sativa Actually Contains

If you have searched for black seed vitamins, you have probably landed on a page listing an impressive set — vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B6, folate and niacin, alongside iron, zinc and calcium. That list is not invented. Those compounds really are detectable in Nigella sativa seed. What almost nobody publishes is the next number: how much of each actually reaches you in a realistic serving. That number changes the answer completely, and it changes it in a direction most supplement pages would rather not print. This article does the arithmetic, explains what survives the press into the oil and what stays behind in the seed cake, and lands on the honest reason black seed is worth taking — which is not its vitamin content.

  • The vitamins genuinely present in the seed are present in trace amounts. Published seed analyses report roughly 15.4 mg thiamin, 57 mg niacin, 5.0 mg vitamin B6 and 160 µg folic acid per kilogram of seed.
  • At a realistic serving those figures are very small. Five grams of whole seed supplies about 7% of the UK and EU Nutrient Reference Value for thiamin, and under 2% for niacin, vitamin B6 and vitamin E.
  • There is a legal threshold, and black seed does not meet it. Under Regulation 1169/2011, retained in UK law, a food needs 15% of the Nutrient Reference Value before it may be described as a "source of" a vitamin. Black seed reaches that for none of them.
  • The oil carries even less than the seed. Water-soluble vitamins — the B group and vitamin C — do not partition into a pressed oil. They stay behind in the seed cake.

"Black Seed Vitamins" Means Three Different Things

Part of the confusion here is linguistic rather than nutritional. The phrase gets used for three separate questions, and they have three separate answers. Sorting them out first saves a lot of wasted reading.

What the Seed Actually Contains, in Numbers

Compositional analyses of Nigella sativa seed consistently report the same small set of B vitamins and a modest tocopherol fraction. The commonly cited figures are around 15.4 mg thiamin, 57 mg niacin, 5.0 mg pyridoxine and 160 µg folic acid per kilogram of seed, with α-tocopherol at roughly 10 mg per kilogram.

Per kilogram is the trap. Nobody eats a kilogram of black seed. Converting those figures to a generous 5 g serving — a heaped teaspoon of whole seed, considerably more than anyone takes as oil — gives the following.

The legal benchmark makes this concrete. Under Regulation 1169/2011, retained in UK law after EU exit, a food may only be called a "source of" a vitamin when it supplies at least 15% of the Nutrient Reference Value, and "high in" requires 30%. Black seed clears neither bar for any vitamin, even at a serving size larger than anyone realistically takes.

Why the Oil Carries Even Less Than the Seed

Every figure above describes the whole seed. Black seed oil is not the whole seed — it is the lipid fraction pressed out of it, and pressing is a separation, not a concentration of everything at once.

Compounds partition according to what they dissolve in. Fat-soluble compounds travel with the oil. Water-soluble compounds stay with the solid residue, the seed cake, which is pressed out and discarded or sold as animal feed. The B vitamins and vitamin C are water-soluble. They are, for practical purposes, not in the bottle.

So a bottle of black seed oil is not a weak multivitamin. It is a different kind of product entirely.

But Every Other Page Says It Is Packed With Vitamins

This is the fair objection, and it deserves a direct answer rather than a dismissal. Those pages are not lying about the presence of the compounds. Analytical chemistry is sensitive, and a laboratory that looks for thiamin in black seed will find thiamin. The error is in the leap from detectable to nutritionally relevant. Presence is not amount.

There is also a specific factual muddle worth correcting, because it circulates widely. Some sources state that black seed contains keratin which the body converts into vitamin A. Keratin is a structural protein found in hair, skin and nails, and it is not a precursor to vitamin A. The compound that genuinely converts to vitamin A is carotene, a carotenoid pigment — present in the seed, again in trace quantities. The correct chemistry does not change the conclusion, but it is worth getting right.

The second reasonable objection: if the vitamin content is negligible, is the whole category a waste of time? No — but the case for it has to be made on different ground, which is where the next section goes.


So What Is the Oil Actually For?

Black seed oil is not taken for its vitamin content, and it is not a substitute for a multivitamin. It is taken for thymoquinone, the most-researched compound in Nigella sativa, along with the seed's fatty-acid profile. Thymoquinone is not a vitamin, has no Nutrient Reference Value, and is not something a conventional supplement provides.

Thymoquinone is strongly fat-soluble and poorly soluble in water, which is why it travels with the oil rather than the seed cake. Published pharmacokinetic work also describes it as having low oral bioavailability and being rapidly eliminated — which is why a good deal of research effort goes into lipid-based delivery systems. A whole cold-pressed oil delivers thymoquinone already dissolved in its natural fatty-acid matrix. That is a well-grounded argument for whole-oil delivery rather than a proven head-to-head clinical verdict, and it is worth stating in those terms.

Thymoquinone is also heat-sensitive and light-sensitive. That is why cold-pressing below 40°C matters, and why industrial refining — which reaches 200–270°C in its deodorisation stages — is incompatible with preserving it. It is also why dark, UV-protective glass is not a styling decision.

How to Read a Black Seed Supplement Label

If the vitamin panel is not the thing that separates one bottle from another, something else has to be. Four checks do most of the work.

  1. Look for a thymoquinone percentage. Most labels do not carry one. Its absence is informative in itself.
  2. Ask whether that percentage is verified, and by whom. A brand's own claim and an independent accredited laboratory's measurement are different categories of evidence.
  3. Check whether testing is per batch or one-off. Seed composition varies by harvest, so a single historic test says less than a per-batch programme.
