Black Sesame Oil for Hair: What Is Actually Known

Black sesame oil for hair is one of the most confidently sold ideas in the whole hair-oil category, and one of the least supported. The claims arrive as a set: it thickens, it strengthens, it slows greying, it wakes up the follicle. They are repeated across product pages, brand blogs and short videos with a consistency that reads like consensus. It is not consensus. When you go looking for the studies underneath, there are almost none, and the two or three that get named turn out to have measured something else entirely. This article is about what has actually been tested, what a hair oil can genuinely do, and where a real hair problem should be taken instead.

Some housekeeping first: we do not sell sesame oil of any kind. We sell one product, a cold-pressed Ethiopian black seed oil, from an unrelated plant, and we have written elsewhere that it does not grow hair either. Nothing below is an attempt to move you sideways onto our bottle.


The Short Answer

  • There is no randomised controlled trial of sesame oil applied to human hair or scalp. Searches of PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov for a hair or scalp endpoint return nothing — not a small trial, not a poor trial, nothing.
  • Human scalp hair growth is governed principally by genetics and by androgen sensitivity at the follicle. Randall's 2008 review in Dermatologic Therapy sets out how androgens drive the conversion of fine vellus hairs to thick terminal ones, and back again. A topical oil has no described route into that system.
  • The nearest thing to laboratory evidence is a 2026 paper in Scientific Reports on sesamin, a sesame lignan. It is a computational and cell-culture study in a keratinocyte cell line — no animals, no people, no topical application, and no hair growth measured at any point.
  • Oils can genuinely change how hair behaves. In a laboratory study of hair fibres, Rele and Mohile found that coconut oil reduced protein loss from hair while sunflower and mineral oil did not. Sesame oil was not among the oils tested.
  • The grey-hair claim has no clinical evidence at all. Once a hair has grown out without pigment it stays that way, and nothing you put on the outside of it will change that.
  • Sesame is one of the fourteen substances that must be declared as an allergen in Great Britain. That matters more for a product you leave on your skin for hours than most hair-oil pages acknowledge.

What Black Sesame Oil Actually Is

Sesame oil is pressed from the seeds of Sesamum indicum, an accepted species in the family Pedaliaceae according to Kew's Plants of the World Online. Black sesame oil is simply oil pressed from black-coated cultivars rather than pale ones. The colour lives in the seed coat, and a 2022 study in Frontiers in Nutrition characterised that pigment as a heat-stable melanin-type polymer rather than the anthocyanin it is often described as.

The oil itself is well characterised. A 2023 review in Frontiers in Nutrition by Oboulbiga and colleagues sets out a profile dominated by linoleic acid and oleic acid in roughly comparable proportions, with palmitic and stearic acids making up most of the remainder, plus a distinctive set of lignans — sesamin, sesamolin and sesamol — and gamma-tocopherol, which in sesame is effectively the only vitamin E form present. Those lignans are the reason sesame oil resists going rancid better than its polyunsaturated content alone would suggest, and they are the compounds every hair claim eventually points at.

Two practical distinctions get blurred constantly. Cold-pressed sesame oil is pale, mild and pressed from raw seed. Toasted sesame oil is the dark, intensely aromatic cooking oil pressed from roasted seed; it is a different product, it smells strongly, and it is not what anyone means by a hair oil. And black sesame oil is a cultivar distinction, not a processing one.

What Drives Hair Growth, and Why an Oil Is Not On the List

To judge any "oil for hair growth" claim you need to know what growth is actually controlled by. It is a short list, and it is not a list an oil appears on.

The last row is the whole argument. Keratinisation — the point at which a hair becomes the inert fibre you can see — is complete within about a millimetre of the base of the follicle. Everything above that is dead protein. An oil applied to the surface is interacting with dead protein and with the top of the skin; it is not in a conversation with the living part of the follicle at all.

What Has Actually Been Studied

We went through this properly, because the claim ecosystem depends on nobody doing so.

The Scientific Reports paper deserves a note, because its title is exactly the kind that gets quoted without being read. It is titled around sesamin alleviating androgenetic alopecia. What was done was target prediction by software, a docking simulation, and Western blots on an immortalised keratinocyte cell line. The authors describe their own work as in vitro and their conclusion as suggesting potential. No hair was measured. Between that paper and a bottle on a bathroom shelf sit an animal model, a safety study, a delivery question and a human trial, none of which has been done.

This is a familiar pattern rather than a sesame-specific one. In the black seed oil category, a 2017 review in the Journal of Tropical Medicine is cited routinely as hair evidence — including on at least one clinician-bylined health site — despite containing no hair or scalp trial whatsoever; its only hair content is a table of manufacturers' marketing claims. The Grey Hair Claim, Handled Directly

Black sesame's reputation for hair colour comes from traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic practice, where the black seed is associated with the kidneys and with hair in a system of correspondences that predates any of the biology. That association is genuinely old and it is culturally meaningful. It is also not a clinical finding, and treating it as one does the tradition no favours.

Mechanically, greying happens when melanocytes in the follicle stop supplying pigment to the growing hair. A hair that has already emerged unpigmented is finished; it contains no living cells and no pigment-producing machinery. Nothing applied to its surface can add pigment back to it. Whatever a topical oil might hypothetically do, reversing existing grey is not on the list, and any page telling you otherwise is describing a physical impossibility.

You will occasionally see the claim that sesame compounds influence tyrosinase, the enzyme involved in melanin synthesis. We could not find that anchored to a hair or scalp study anywhere — in the top search results for this topic it appears without a citation attached. Treat it as an unsourced assertion.

What an Oil Can Genuinely Do

None of the above means a hair oil is pointless. It means the honest description of what it does is smaller and more physical than the marketing one.

A lipid film on the hair shaft reduces friction between fibres, which makes combing easier and mechanical breakage during styling less likely. It fills in the microscopic irregularities of a damaged cuticle, which is why oiled hair looks glossier — a smoother surface reflects light more evenly. Applied before washing, an oil can limit how much water the fibre absorbs and how much it swells, and swelling is one of the ways repeated washing damages hair. These are real, useful cosmetic effects, and sesame oil is perfectly capable of producing them.

The category's problem is not that oils do nothing. It is that what they do is modest and cosmetic, and modest and cosmetic does not sell.


The Objections Worth Taking Seriously

"People have used sesame oil on hair for thousands of years — doesn't that count for something?" It counts as evidence that it is tolerable, pleasant and available, which is not nothing. Long traditional use is a reasonable reason to try something and a poor reason to believe a specific mechanistic claim about follicles. Those are different questions, and conflating them is how a cosmetic practice acquires a medical vocabulary it never earned.

"My hair genuinely looks better since I started oiling it." We would expect it to, and that is not a placebo dismissal. Reduced friction, a smoother cuticle, less breakage during combing and less swelling during washing all produce visibly better hair. What that observation cannot distinguish is whether you have more hair or simply less broken hair — and those are different outcomes with different causes.

"There is a 2026 paper with alopecia in the title." There is, and we have read it. It is software prediction plus a cell line. Cell-culture findings fail to translate into clinical effect far more often than they succeed, which is why the animal and human steps exist. Citing the title as though it were a result is the single most common error in this whole subject.


Using It Sensibly, and Choosing a Bottle

If you want to use sesame oil on your hair as a conditioning treatment — a perfectly reasonable thing to want — a few practical points.

  • Patch test first, and take the allergen point seriously. Sesame is one of the fourteen substances that must be declared under Annex II of assimilated Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, where item 11 reads "Sesame seeds and products thereof". Sesame allergy is real and can be significant. If there is any history of it in your household, this is not the oil for you.
  • Buy cold-pressed, not toasted, unless you want your hair to smell strongly of a stir-fry. They are different products.
  • Use less than you think. Most people apply far too much and then need harsh washing to remove it, which undoes the point.
  • Pre-wash rather than leave-in is the better use for a heavy oil on most hair types — apply to lengths, leave for half an hour, then shampoo.
  • Keep it out of light and heat. Sesame oil resists oxidation better than most seed oils thanks to its lignans, but dark glass and a cool cupboard still extend its life.

And the part that matters most. If you are losing hair, or your parting is widening, or you are shedding noticeably more than usual, an oil is not the intervention — a diagnosis is. Shedding has causes that are identifiable and often addressable, and several of them show up on a blood test. Speak to a GP, a pharmacist or a dermatologist, who can look at your scalp and work out which one it is. That is a better use of the next three months than any bottle.

Final Thoughts

The honest account of black sesame oil for hair is short, and it is not the account you will find on most of the pages selling it. There is no human trial. The one recent paper with alopecia in its title is a cell-culture and computational study. The best-known hair-fibre research tested three oils and sesame was not among them. The grey-hair claim asks a dead fibre to do something a dead fibre cannot do.

What remains is a decent conditioning oil with an unusually stable composition, and that is a fair thing to buy it for. The mistake is not using it. The mistake is expecting it to solve a problem that has a cause, and letting three months pass with a bottle instead of a diagnosis. If your hair is changing in a way that worries you, that is a conversation to have with a clinician who can look at your scalp.
