Indian Black Seed Oil: What Origin Does and Doesn't Tell You

A bottle labelled Indian black seed oil raises a fair question: does the country on the label tell you anything useful about what is inside? India is one of the world's significant growers of Nigella sativa — the plant sold there as kalonji — and Indian-origin oil is widely available in the UK, EU and US. It is also where the naming gets genuinely confusing, because the phrase "black cumin" points to a different plant in Indian usage than it does in English supplement marketing. This article covers what Indian black seed oil actually is, how much thymoquinone Indian-grown seed has been measured to contain, and why origin turns out to be a much weaker predictor of quality than the internet suggests.

The Short Answer

  • Indian black seed oil is oil pressed from Nigella sativa seed grown in India. In India that seed is called kalonji, and the identity is fixed in law: India's Food Safety and Standards Regulations define "Cumin Black (Kalonji) whole" as the seeds of Nigella sativa L.
  • It is not the same plant as Indian "black cumin" in the culinary sense. Kala jeera or shahi jeera is Bunium persicum (now accepted as Elwendia persica), a member of the carrot family. Nigella sativa is in the buttercup family. They are not related.
  • Indian government standards cover kalonji seed — under food regulations and under AGMARK grading — but there is no Indian standard for kalonji oil among the country's standardised edible oils. That gap matters more than provenance.
  • Measured thymoquinone in five released Indian varieties ran from 0.11% to 0.20% of the extracted oil (Ravi et al., PeerJ 2024;12:e17177; PMID 38563005). Figures in the 20–35% range that circulate online are shares of the oil's volatile fraction, not of the oil.
  • The widely repeated ranking that puts Ethiopian seed above Indian rests on a single 2006 survey of retail seed packets bought in Riyadh. A 2018 study using a different method found both Indian samples above the Ethiopian one, and Turkey highest of all.
  • Origin, in other words, is a starting point and not a result. The only thing that tells you what is in a specific bottle is a dated, independent measurement of that batch.

What "Indian Black Seed Oil" Actually Refers To

Black seed oil is the fixed oil pressed from the seed of Nigella sativa L., a small flowering annual in the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. The species was formally described by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum in 1753 and its accepted name has not changed since. The seeds are small — roughly 2 to 3.5 mm long by 1 to 2 mm wide — angular and three-sided, with flat facets and a matte black surface.

In India the seed is kalonji, and that identity is not merely colloquial. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India monographs the species as Upakuñcikā (Part I, Volume I, monograph 74), and the Unani Pharmacopoeia of India carries it under the name Kalonji (Part I, Volume I, monograph 20, 2007). India's Food Safety and Standards Regulations set a seed standard at Regulation 2.9.8, which states in terms that "Cumin Black (Kalonji) whole means the seeds of Nigella sativa L." The Bureau of Indian Standards terminology standard for spices, IS 1877:1985, lists the same equivalence — Nigella sativa Linn., "Cumin, black", "Kalonji, Kala Jira".

Regional names vary and are worth knowing if you buy from a South Asian grocer rather than a supplement shop: kalo jeera in Bengali, karunjeeragam in Tamil, karinjeerakam in Malayalam, kari jeerige in Kannada. Only kalonji has statutory backing, and regional usage is inconsistent enough that the same shelf label is sometimes attached to a different seed entirely — which is the next problem.

The Name Collision That Trips Up Indian Labels

English-language supplement marketing calls Nigella sativa "black cumin". Indian culinary usage generally does not. In Indian kitchens, kala jeera or shahi jeera is Bunium persicum (Boiss.) B.Fedtsch. — currently accepted under the name Elwendia persica — which belongs to the carrot family, Apiaceae, and is genuinely a relative of cumin and caraway. Nigella sativa belongs to Ranunculaceae. The two are in different botanical orders. They look different, taste different, and are not substitutes for one another.

This produces a specific, real-world failure: retail listings that sell "Karunjeeragam / Kala Jeera / Kalonji" as one product, folding two unrelated species into a single line item. If you are buying seed rather than oil, the fix is to look at the seed itself — Nigella seeds are small, angular and flat-faceted; Bunium seeds are longer, curved and ridged, much closer in shape to a cumin seed.

There is a second, subtler mix-up in the literature. A number of published reviews list "Krishna-Jiraka" as a Sanskrit synonym for Nigella sativa. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India does not agree: it monographs Kṛṣṇajīraka separately, as Carum carvi Linn. (Part I, Volume I, monograph 48) — again an Apiaceae plant, and a different entry from Upakuñcikā at monograph 74. Where a review paper and a national pharmacopoeia disagree about which plant a name refers to, the pharmacopoeia is the one to follow. Where Kalonji Is Actually Grown in India

Indian agricultural research places nigella cultivation across the north and east of the country. A review from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research's National Research Centre on Seed Spices at Ajmer (Dubey et al., Indian Journal of Agricultural Sciences 2016;86(8):967–979) records cultivation in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, the Gangetic plains of Bihar and Bengal, Assam and Maharashtra. Rajasthan is the centre of the formal breeding programme, and released varieties are recommended for nigella-growing areas of that state.

Here is a fact that surprised us, and that no buying guide seems to mention: nobody can tell you how much kalonji India produces. The Spices Board of India publishes state-by-state area and production tables covering around twenty-one spices, and nigella appears in none of them. Nor does it have a dedicated eight-digit customs code, so imports and exports are pooled with cumin, caraway, fennel and anise. Any tonnage figure you see attributed to Indian kalonji is an estimate, and the academic sources that publish those estimates say so themselves.

What India does have is a formal varietal breeding programme, and — unusually for this category — published measurements of what those varieties contain.

Those figures are from Ravi and colleagues in PeerJ (2024;12:e17177; PMID 38563005), using hexane extraction followed by HPLC. A separate survey by the same group screened forty Indian accessions from thirteen states by HPTLC and found thymoquinone in the dried seed ranging from 42.88 to 247.60 micrograms per 100 mg — about 0.04% to 0.25% of seed weight (Open Life Sciences 2023;18(1):20220536; PMID 36816805). The spread within India is wider than the spread usually claimed between countries.

The Percentage Trap: Why "30% Thymoquinone" and "0.2% Thymoquinone" Can Describe the Same Oil

If you have compared black seed oils for more than an hour, you have met wildly incompatible thymoquinone numbers. They are not all wrong. They are mostly measuring different things, and almost nobody says which.

One published study makes the point better than any explanation. Mazhar and Agrawal, working at Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research, analysed the same Nigella sativa seeds by two methods in a single paper (Frontiers in Pharmacology 2021;12:642067; PMID 34916928). By HPTLC they reported thymoquinone at 0.17% by weight of the hydroalcoholic extract. By GC-MS — run not on that extract but on the essential oil hydrodistilled from the same seeds — thymoquinone appears at 0.76% of the peak area. Same seeds, same laboratory, same paper — two "percentages" differing more than fourfold, because they are answers to different questions asked of different fractions of the seed.

So when a comparison of Egyptian, Ethiopian and Syrian oils reported thymoquinone shares of 34.84%, 27.36% and 22.59% respectively (Abdel-Razek et al., Molecules 2024;29(21):4985), those are shares of each oil's volatile fraction measured by SPME-GC-MS — not the proportion of the bottle. Does Origin Actually Predict Thymoquinone? The Honest Answer

This is the section where we have to be careful, because we sell Ethiopian oil, and the received wisdom favours us. It deserves a harder look than we usually see it given.

The origin ranking that circulates almost everywhere traces to one paper: Al-Saleh, Billedo and El-Doush, in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis (2006;19(2–3):167–175). It measured thymoquinone in seed and reported Ethiopian highest at 3,098.5 mg/kg, followed by India at 2,362.8, Saudi Arabia at 2,250.6, Syria at 1,371.9 and Sudan at 1,274.6.

Read the design, though. It was a survey of retail brands of packaged seed bought in local markets in Riyadh, with country of origin taken from the packet. It was not a controlled agronomic comparison of seed grown and harvested under matched conditions. The paper's own overall mean was 2,224 ± 1,630 mg/kg — a scatter so wide that within-group variation plausibly swamps the differences between countries. And it has not, as far as we can find, been replicated with a controlled design in the two decades since.

Now the inconvenient part. A 2018 analysis by Ahmad and colleagues in Pharmacognosy Magazine (2018;14(57 Suppl):S471–S480) quantified thymoquinone by UHPLC in twelve seed samples from eleven countries, including two Indian sources — herbal gardens at Integral University in Lucknow and Jamia Hamdard in New Delhi. In that study both Indian samples out-measured the Ethiopian one, and Turkey came top. Its authors concluded that Turkish seed carried the highest thymoquinone of those examined. We should note that this paper's units are internally inconsistent between its abstract and its tables, so we would not quote its absolute values — but the ranking is a genuine published result that points the opposite way.

Three studies, three methods, three different answers, and India lands in a different place in each. The honest conclusion is not that Indian seed is weaker or stronger than Ethiopian seed. It is that the published evidence is too thin and too inconsistent to rank countries at all, and that anyone selling you a nationality as a proxy for potency — ourselves included, if we ever did — is overreading it.

What we will say about our own sourcing is narrower and defensible. We chose Ethiopian highland seed after evaluating thirty-six suppliers, because the seed we tested came back consistently high. The Regulatory Gap That Matters More Than the Map

Here is something concrete and checkable that applies directly to a bottle of Indian-origin oil. India regulates kalonji seed properly. Food Safety and Standards Regulation 2.9.8 sets limits for extraneous matter, moisture, total ash, acid-insoluble ash, non-volatile ether extract, volatile oil and insect-damaged matter. The AGMARK Spices Grading and Marking Rules 2012 add voluntary grades for kalonji whole and powder at Schedules XXVI and XXVII.

Kalonji oil falls outside all of it. India's standards for vegetable oils cover around two dozen named oils, and nigella seed oil is not among them. Worth flagging in passing, because it catches people out: the list does include "Niger seed oil", which is Guizotia abyssinica, an entirely different plant from the daisy family. A bottle of kalonji oil is therefore sold without a dedicated compositional standard to be measured against — not because anyone did anything wrong, but because the standard was never written.

Does that mean Indian oil is adulterated? No, and we are not going to imply it. The most relevant published check we can find points the other way: a Botanical Adulterants Prevention Bulletin on nigella seed and seed oil (Orhan, ABC-AHP-NCNPR, 2022) reports that two commercial samples originating from Ethiopia and India showed no evidence of adulteration. That is a small negative finding, not a clean bill of health for a whole country's output — but it is what the record says, and we would rather report it than insinuate around it.

What is well established is that dilution of nigella oil with cheaper vegetable oils is a recognised risk across the category, and that analytical methods exist to catch it — infrared spectroscopy with partial least squares regression can detect nigella oil cut with corn or soybean oil (Rohman and Ariani, The Scientific World Journal 2013;2013:740142). The methods exist. The question for any bottle is whether anybody ran them.

Three Objections Worth Taking Seriously

"This reads like an Ethiopian seller talking down Indian seed." It would be a fair suspicion, so read the section above again: the strongest evidence for the origin ranking we benefit from is a twenty-year-old market survey, and the study that used a better analytical method put both Indian samples above the Ethiopian one. We have put that in the article, in a table, rather than leaving it out. If Indian seed is what you want, the argument in this piece is not against it — it is against buying any seed, from anywhere, on the strength of a flag rather than a measurement.

"My family has cooked with kalonji for generations and never needed a certificate." Entirely true, and nothing here contradicts it. Kalonji as a kitchen spice is a food with a long and living tradition, bought by smell and by trust in a shop. A concentrated pressed oil sold as a supplement is a different transaction: you cannot smell thymoquinone, the content varies several-fold between varieties grown in the same country, and there is no dedicated Indian standard for the oil. Certification is not a slight on the tradition; it answers a question the tradition never had to ask.

"If origin doesn't matter, why does your own label say Ethiopian?" Because origin is a reasonable place to start looking and a poor place to stop. We name our origin for the same reason a wine names a region — it is real information about where the crop came from and how it was grown. What it is not is a substitute for testing the batch. If our Ethiopian seed came back low, the honest response would be to change supplier, not to lean harder on the map.


How to Judge a Bottle of Indian Black Seed Oil

Everything above collapses into a short list of questions, and they are the same questions whatever the country on the label.

  • Is there a single measured thymoquinone figure, rather than "up to" or "high potency"?
  • Does the figure say what it is a percentage of — the oil, or the volatile fraction?
  • Who measured it, and are they an accredited third-party laboratory rather than the brand itself?
  • Is the measurement dated and tied to a batch, rather than a single historic test?
  • Is the ingredient list a single ingredient, with no carrier oil?
  • Is it cold-pressed with a stated temperature ceiling, not just the phrase?
  • Is it in opaque or UV-protective glass, since thymoquinone degrades in light?

Final Thoughts

"Indian black seed oil" is a perfectly sensible thing to search for, and India is a perfectly sensible place for the seed to have come from. What the phrase cannot do is tell you what is in the bottle, because the published evidence linking country to thymoquinone content is thin, inconsistent, and mostly built on single samples bought at retail.

The more useful shift is from a question about geography to a question about measurement. Not "where was this grown", but "what does it contain, who measured it, and when". That question has a checkable answer. The first one does not.
