Turkish Black Seed Oil: What Origin Does and Doesn't Tell You

Turkish black seed oil turns up on more labels every year, and the word "Turkish" is doing a great deal of quiet work on those labels. It suggests heritage, warmth, a farmer on an Anatolian plateau — and it is not a marketing invention. Turkey genuinely grows Nigella sativa at scale, has its own registered cultivar, and its agronomists publish on the crop. The honest question is a narrower one: does knowing that a bottle came from Turkey tell you what is actually inside it? On the published evidence, not really — and precisely the same is true of every other origin, including ours. What follows is what Turkey actually produces, what has actually been measured in Turkish oil, and what does tell you what you are buying.

The Short Answer
- Turkey is a genuine and fast-growing black cumin producer. National statistics reported by Gökçöl (2023) in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems record Turkish production rising from 3,412 tonnes on 3,377 hectares in 2020 to 10,089 tonnes on 10,802 hectares in 2022.
- "Turkish" on a label is a statement about geography, not about strength. It tells you where the seed was grown, and nothing about how the oil was pressed, stored, or tested.
- Published measurements of Turkish oil vary enormously. Süntar and colleagues (2025) measured 2.31% thymoquinone in a cold-pressed oil from Turkish-origin seed; Işık and colleagues (2017) found a range of 0.05% to 0.62% across ten black seed oils bought from herbalists in Ankara.
- Most of the very large "thymoquinone" percentages on sale are percentages of the essential oil, not of the bottle. Thymoquinone can be 20–45% of the volatile fraction and well under 3% of the whole cold-pressed oil. Both numbers can be true; they are not comparable.
- No published study has compared Turkish and Ethiopian black seed oil head to head. Anyone ranking one above the other is going beyond the evidence — ourselves included.

What Turkey Actually Grows: Çörek Otu on the Anatolian Plateau
Black cumin is known in Turkey as çörek otu, and it is a genuine kitchen and pharmacy staple rather than an export-only crop — the seed sits on bread, in cheeses, and in traditional preparations across the country. The agricultural picture behind it has changed quickly. Gökçöl (2023), writing in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems and citing Turkish national statistics, records production of 3,412 tonnes from 3,377 hectares in 2020, 6,435 tonnes from 8,391 hectares in 2021, and 10,089 tonnes from 10,802 hectares in 2022. That is close to a tripling of output in two seasons.
Cultivation is concentrated rather than nationwide. The same paper names Bursa, Afyon, Konya, Burdur and Nevşehir as the usual growing provinces, with newer plantings in south-eastern Anatolia around Gaziantep and Mardin. A separate Turkish study of the sector, Sarıca and Özata (2026) in the Journal of Tekirdag Agricultural Faculty, found that over 2012–2022 production was led by Uşak at 34.8%, Burdur at 17.8% and Çorum at 9.6%.
Turkey has also done the slower work of formal breeding. Kırıcı and colleagues (2021), in the Turkish Journal of Field Crops, describe the Çameli cultivar, registered in April 2014 by the Transitional Zone Agricultural Research Institute in Eskişehir. As far as the published record goes, Çameli is Turkey's one registered Nigella sativa variety; the rest of the crop is grown from local landraces and unnamed populations. That is a real distinction, and it matters more than the flag on the bottle, because a named cultivar is something a producer can be held to.

What "Turkish Black Seed Oil" Tells You — and What It Leaves Out
No country produces the best black seed oil. Origin sets an upper limit on what a seed can contain, but thymoquinone survives or degrades according to how the seed is handled after harvest — pressing temperature, light exposure, storage time and refining all move the number. A verified figure from any origin beats an unverified claim from a famous one.
That is the whole argument in one paragraph, and it cuts against us as readily as it cuts against anyone selling Turkish oil. Origin is an input. It is a reasonable place to start looking, and a poor place to stop.

The Thymoquinone Percentage Trap: What the Number Is a Percentage Of
This is the single most useful thing to understand before comparing any two bottles, and it is where origin marketing does the most damage. Thymoquinone is routinely reported two completely different ways, and the two figures differ by roughly two orders of magnitude.
Hydrodistil a batch of black seed and you recover a small quantity of essential oil — the volatile fraction. Thymoquinone makes up a large share of that fraction. Cold-press the same seed and you get a fixed oil, which is what fills a 100ml bottle, and thymoquinone is a small percentage of it. Once you know which of the three you are reading, most of the confusion in this category disappears. It is also why a figure like 2.67% is not a modest one — it is simply an honest one, measured against the whole oil. What Has Actually Been Measured in Turkish Black Seed Oil
Two peer-reviewed datasets speak directly to Turkish oil, and they point in strikingly different directions — which is the most informative thing about them.
Süntar and colleagues (2025), in Natural Products Analysis, profiled cold-pressed oils from Turkish- and Syrian-origin Nigella sativa seed and measured thymoquinone at 2.31% in the Turkish-origin oil by HPLC, with none detected in the Syrian-origin oil. That is a strong result for Turkish seed, and it deserves saying plainly. It also comes with a caveat the authors are clear about: both seed lots were grown in the same field at Polatlı near Ankara, so the comparison isolates seed genetics rather than country conditions, and it rests on one oil per origin.
Işık, Kartal and Erdem (2017), in the Journal of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Ankara University, took a different approach — they bought what was actually on sale. Across ten black seed oils from herbalists in Ankara, HPLC returned thymoquinone from 0.05% to 0.62%. Across ten capsule products from the same markets, the spread ran from 0.04% to 2.02%.

Read those rows together and the conclusion writes itself. Turkish seed can clearly yield a strong oil. Turkish shelves also carry oils with almost nothing measurable in them. The word "Turkish" does not distinguish between the two — a certificate does.

The Honest Limits of Any Origin Argument, Including Ours
We sell Ethiopian oil, so the sceptical reader is entitled to ask whether this whole article is a long way of saying "buy ours". Here are the boundaries, stated openly.
The comparative study most often cited on origin is Abdel-Razek and colleagues (2024) in Molecules, which assessed Egyptian, Ethiopian and Syrian black cumin oils and found the Ethiopian oil highest in phenolic compounds, flavonoids, phytosterols and tocochromanols, with thymoquinone the highest share of its volatile fraction at 34.8%, against 27.4% for Egyptian and 22.6% for Syrian. Two things follow. First, that 34.8% is a share of the volatile fraction, not of the bottle. Second — and this is the part that matters here — Turkey was not in the study. It cannot rank Turkish oil, and neither can we.
There is separate published support for Ethiopian genetic diversity: Degu and colleagues (2025), in Biochemistry Research International, analysed 64 Ethiopian genotypes and resolved two chemotypes, one high in thymoquinone and one high in p-cymene. That is a finding about the breeding potential of a gene pool, not a verdict on any finished bottle. Turkey's Çameli programme is doing recognisably similar work.

How to Check Any Bottle, Whatever the Flag on the Label
The checks below work identically for a Turkish oil, an Ethiopian one, or an unlabelled one. They are the reason a well-run Turkish producer has nothing to fear from this article.
- Ask for a Certificate of Analysis, and check it is per batch. A single certificate from 2019 reused across every bottle since tells you about one press, not about yours.
- Check what the thymoquinone figure is a percentage of. Whole fixed oil, or essential oil? If the producer cannot say, that is your answer.
- Look for a named, accredited laboratory rather than "lab tested" as a phrase.
- Check the extraction method. Cold-pressed, expeller-pressed and solvent-extracted are three different products.
- Prefer unrefined oil in dark glass. Thymoquinone is heat-sensitive and light-sensitive; refining and clear bottles both work against it.
- Look for a harvest or batch date. Black seed oil oxidises, and an undated bottle hides its own age.
