C60 Olive Oil: What the Evidence Actually Shows

C60 olive oil is sold on one of the boldest promises in the supplement trade: that a solution of carbon-60 fullerene dissolved in olive oil can slow down ageing. The promise traces almost entirely to a single paper published in 2012, in which rats given the solution lived markedly longer than the animals they were compared with. That paper is real, it is still in the literature, and it is also one of the most heavily misread studies on the internet. This article does what the search results for C60 olive oil mostly do not — it names the study, reports what two later attempts to reproduce it found, and sets out the current legal position for C60 as a food ingredient. Then it looks honestly at what ordinary olive oil is.

The Short Answer

  • C60 olive oil is a suspension of buckminsterfullerene — a hollow, sixty-atom carbon molecule — in olive oil, which happens to be one of the few edible solvents that will dissolve it.
  • The lifespan claim rests on one paper: Baati T, Bourasset F, Gharbi N, Njim L, Abderrabba M, Kerkeni A, Szwarc H and Moussa F, Biomaterials 2012;33(19):4936–4946 (PMID 22498298). Its stated aim was to establish the chronic toxicity of C60, not to test longevity.
  • That paper carries a published corrigendum by the same authors: Biomaterials 2012;33(26):6292–6294. It has not been retracted; the corrigendum sits on the PubMed record as an erratum notice.
  • Two independent mouse studies published in 2021 both failed to find a lifespan benefit. One of them, Grohn et al. in GeroScience, additionally found that C60 in olive oil forms toxic species under ordinary room light.
  • C60 is not an authorised novel food in Great Britain. A search of the Food Standards Agency's GB novel food authorisations register on 21 August 2026 returned no entry for "fullerene" or "C60". It does not appear in the European Commission's Novel Food status Catalogue either.
  • There is no human trial of C60 for ageing, longevity or any other outcome. Every claim you will read about it in people is extrapolated from rodents.

What C60 Olive Oil Is

C60 olive oil is extra virgin or refined olive oil in which carbon-60 fullerene has been dissolved, usually at low concentrations and then filtered to remove undissolved particles. C60 is a hollow sphere of sixty carbon atoms, discovered in 1985. It is almost insoluble in water and only sparingly soluble in oils, which is why olive oil became the standard vehicle for it.

The choice of olive oil was not aesthetic. Braun and colleagues published a short paper in Fullerenes, Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures in 2007 titled "Olive oil as a biocompatible solvent for pristine C60", and that work is cited in the 2012 rat study itself. Olive oil is simply one of the few edible liquids that will hold the molecule in solution at a workable concentration.

Commercially, the product is sold in small dark bottles, often 100ml, sometimes with a dropper or applicator, and often alongside versions made with MCT oil or avocado oil. Vendors typically describe their material as "research grade". That phrase has no regulatory meaning in a food context.

The 2012 Rat Study — and the Two Studies That Followed

The paper behind the entire category is Baati and colleagues, published in Biomaterials in June 2012, volume 33, issue 19, pages 4936 to 4946 (DOI 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2012.03.036, PMID 22498298). Its title is "The prolongation of the lifespan of rats by repeated oral administration of [60]fullerene", and its abstract is explicit about the purpose: more than twenty-five years after C60's discovery, "the in vivo fate and the chronic effects of this fullerene remain unknown", and the authors set out to address that. The lifespan finding emerged from a chronic toxicity design. It was not the question the study was built to answer.

Three things about that paper are worth holding in mind. It is small. It has never been independently reproduced. And it carries a corrigendum published by the same eight authors three months later, in Biomaterials 2012;33(26):6292–6294 (DOI 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2012.05.023). We checked the PubMed record for PMID 22498298 on 21 August 2026: it lists "Erratum in Biomaterials. 2012 Sep;33(26):6292-4" and carries no retraction notice. The paper stands, corrected. Anyone who tells you it was retracted is wrong; anyone who tells you the record is entirely clean has not looked.

What happened next is the part the vendor pages leave out. In 2021, two separate groups published lifespan work on C60 in mice.

The Shytikov result is the one that deserves a second read. In that study, C60-treated mice did live longer than mice given olive oil alone — but they lived no longer than mice given plain water. The abstract puts it plainly: "Treatment of mice with C60 fullerenes resulted in an increased lifespan of males and females compared with the olive oil-treated animals. The lifespan of C60-treated mice was similar to the mice treated with water." When your positive result disappears the moment you add a water control, the finding is about the control group.

Light, Purity, and What Is Actually in the Bottle

The single most practical finding in the recent literature is not about ageing at all. Grohn and colleagues, publishing in GeroScience in 2021, reported that pristine C60 in olive oil "does form toxic species that can cause significant morbidity and mortality in mice in under 2 weeks when exposed to light levels consistent with ambient light". Not laboratory ultraviolet. Room light.

The same paper obtained C60 olive oil from a sample of online vendors and found, in the authors' words, "marked discrepancies in appearance, impurity profile, concentration, and activity relative to pristine C60-OO formulated in-house". That is a plain statement that what is sold under this name varies, and that a buyer holding a bottle has no practical way to know which version they have.

This is a general problem with any ingredient outside a regulated framework, and it is worth being fair about it. It is not evidence that any particular vendor is careless. It is evidence that the category has no compositional standard to be held to — no equivalent of the free acidity, peroxide value and sensory panel that define extra virgin olive oil, and no equivalent of the polyphenol threshold that European law attaches to a specific health claim. Where there is no standard, there is nothing to verify against.

Is C60 Legal to Sell as a Food?

This is the question buyers ask least and should ask first. We checked the primary registers on 21 August 2026 rather than relying on secondary sources, and the position is clearer than the marketing suggests.

In Great Britain, the Food Standards Agency maintains a public register of authorised novel foods. Searching that register for "fullerene" returns no results; searching for "C60" returns no results. The register was last updated on 31 March 2026. As a control, searching the same register for "astaxanthin" returns the authorised entry NOVEL-17, so the search itself works.

In the European Union, Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 defines a novel food to include, at Article 3(2)(a)(i), "food with a new or intentionally modified molecular structure, where that structure was not used as, or in, a food within the Union before 15 May 1997", and at Article 3(2)(a)(viii), "food consisting of engineered nanomaterials". Article 6(2) of the same Regulation states that "Only novel foods authorised and included in the Union list may be placed on the market within the Union". C60 does not appear in the European Commission's Novel Food status Catalogue — the F section of that catalogue runs from Fucus vesiculosus through "Fulvic acid" to Fusarium venenatum with no fullerene entry.

The honest reading is this: C60 has no food authorisation in Great Britain or the European Union, and the Regulation's own definitions bring it squarely within the category that requires one. That is a regulatory fact, not a safety verdict. It does not mean the substance has been assessed and rejected. It means it has not been through the process.


The Objections Worth Taking Seriously

"You sell olive oil, so of course you are sceptical." That is a fair thing to notice, and we would rather name it than have you notice it silently. We do sell olive oil. We also have no product to sell you in this category and no interest in pretending the 2012 paper does not exist — it does, it is interesting, and we have cited it in full. What we will not do is describe a rat study as if it applied to you.

"Absence of replication is not disproof." Correct, and it is a point that is often made carelessly in the other direction. But we are past the stage of mere absence. Two groups tried, in mice, in 2021, and neither found a benefit — and one of the two found the apparent benefit dissolved when a water control was added. That is a different and stronger situation than a finding simply sitting unreplicated.

"Regulators are slow. Not being authorised does not mean unsafe." Also true. Plenty of perfectly ordinary foods are unauthorised in the novel food sense purely because nobody has paid for the dossier. The reason it matters here is narrower: authorisation is the only mechanism that produces a public compositional specification. Without one, the Grohn finding about vendor-to-vendor variation has no remedy.

What Plain Olive Oil Actually Offers

It would be easy to end this article with a shrug. It is more useful to say what the boring option gives you, because it is not nothing.

Extra virgin olive oil is one of the very few foods with an authorised health claim in European law, and the wording is precise. Under Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, "Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress". The conditions of use are equally precise: "The claim may be used only for olive oil which contains at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives (e.g. oleuropein complex and tyrosol) per 20 g of olive oil. In order to bear the claim information shall be given to the consumer that the beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 20 g of olive oil." That is one authorised claim, with a measurable threshold, an accredited analytical method behind it, and a stated daily intake. It is the opposite of an unverifiable promise.

The same regulation carries a second claim relevant to olive oil, for oleic acid: "Replacing saturated fats in the diet with unsaturated fats contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. Oleic acid is an unsaturated fat." Olive oil is predominantly oleic acid. None of that makes olive oil a treatment for anything. It is a food. What it does have is a floor you can stand on: a grade defined in law, a claim with a number attached, and a set of measurements any competent laboratory can run.   • Halal certified, with 10% of profits to charity as a brand-wide commitment, and fulfilment in the UK, EU, and US.

We will not tell you Sidr & Stone is the best olive oil — that would be the very kind of claim this article warns against. What we will say is that our oil is single-estate Moroccan, rain-fed, organically grown, and cold-pressed within hours of harvest, and that the evidence of that care is in the taste, the colour and the size of the season's batch. Final Thoughts

The idea behind C60 olive oil is genuinely appealing, and it is worth saying so without sneering. A single elegant molecule, an ordinary kitchen ingredient as its carrier, and a startling result in a real peer-reviewed journal — that is a good story, and the people buying it are not fools for finding it interesting. We found it interesting too.

The trouble is that the story has not held up. The original paper was a toxicity study with a corrigendum attached. Two attempts to reproduce the lifespan effect in mice failed, and one of them suggested the original comparison group may have been the problem. A third finding — that the product forms toxic species in room light — is the kind of thing that ought to be on every label and is on none of them. There is no human evidence at all, and no food authorisation in Great Britain or the European Union.

What is left, if you want a daily spoonful of something with actual evidence behind it, is the oil itself: a food with a defined grade, one authorised health claim with a measurable threshold, and several thousand years of use. That is a lower ceiling than "doubles lifespan". It is also a floor that does not give way.
