Nobleza del Sur Olive Oil: An Honest Review of the Jaén Estate

Search for Nobleza del Sur olive oil and most of what comes back is shop listings: the Organic Day bottle with the bee, the Night bottle with the moth, a gift box. What is harder to find is a plain account of who makes it and what is actually in each bottle. So we read the producer's own website on 2 October 2026 — its history, its farm pages, its shop and its full awards list — and set it out here. Nobleza del Sur is the brand of Aceites Castellar, a family business in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, that grows its own olives on more than 300 hectares and presses them in its own mill. This is an honest review: the family, the range bottle by bottle, what the awards mean, and where they are ahead of us.

For our own oil, see our Cold-Pressed Single-Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Marrakech (500ml).

The Short Answer

  • Nobleza del Sur is the olive oil brand of Aceites Castellar S.L., whose mill stands on the Sabiote road at Castellar, in the province of Jaén, Spain.
  • The producer says its oils are "Homegrown Oils", made only from olives grown on the family's own farms — more than 300 hectares across Jaén, close to the Guadalimar river.
  • The family traces its olive growing to 1640, when an ancestor, Miguel Sánchez Sagra, acquired a grove at Los Añadíos; the Peñuelas-Sagra family still farms it, twelve generations on.
  • The range is built mainly on two varieties, Picual and Arbequina: the organic Ecológico Day (100% Picual) and Ecológico Night (a multi-variety coupage), Centenarium Premium, Arbequina Premium, NOVO, Tradición 1640, Reserva Familiar and a children's oil.
  • Its own product pages describe cold extraction within a maximum of four hours of picking, and an approximate acidity of 0.1° on Ecológico Day — far inside the 0.8% ceiling for extra virgin.
  • The awards list is long and consistent: New York International Olive Oil Competition gold for Ecológico Day in 2024 and 2025, and 99/100 in the Flos Olei guide in several recent editions.
  • Sidr & Stone makes a different kind of oil: one single-estate, rain-fed extra virgin from our own family farm outside Marrakech, cold-pressed within hours of harvest and bottled unfiltered.

Who Makes Nobleza del Sur Olive Oil

Behind the brand is Aceites Castellar S.L., with an office in Úbeda and its almazara — the olive mill — at Castellar, both in the province of Jaén. The family history on the producer's site starts in 1640, when Miguel Sánchez Sagra, a direct ancestor, acquired an olive plantation at Los Añadíos. Twelve generations later the Peñuelas-Sagra family still works that grove, with three generations involved in the business today.

The important commercial fact is the one the producer puts first: these are its own olives. The family grew olives for centuries before it pressed them, and its own account is that it built its own mill so that it could turn the fruit from its trees into oil itself. That makes Nobleza del Sur a grower-producer rather than a blender buying oil on the open market — the same structure as Oro Bailén, another Jaén family estate we have reviewed. Our guide to single-estate olive oil explains why that matters for what a label can honestly tell you.

The Nobleza del Sur Range, Bottle by Bottle

The shop groups the oils into five families — NOVO, Ecológico, Premium, Tradición 1640 and Familiar — plus gift boxes. Each product page names the variety and, for most, the farm. That is genuinely useful: you can tell from the page which grove and which olive you are buying.

Oil Variety (as stated) Farm or source (as stated) Organic
Ecológico Day 100% Picual Finca Vista Alegre Yes
Ecológico Night Plurivarietal coupage Selected plots across the family's groves Yes
Centenarium Premium 100% Picual Finca Vista Alegre — centuries-old native Picual trees No
Arbequina Premium 100% Arbequina Finca El Campillo No
NOVO (2025/26 harvest) 100% Picual Finca Vista Alegre No
Tradición 1640 Picual; Arbequina; organic coupage El Campillo (Arbequina); organic groves (coupage) Organic version only
Only for Children Bio Mostly Arbequina, some Picual Finca Vista Alegre Yes
Reserva Familiar Not stated on the overview Los Añadíos, the original family grove No

In practice, the range divides by style. The Picual oils — Ecológico Day, Centenarium Premium, NOVO — are the green, herbaceous, bitter-and-peppery bottles Jaén is known for; our guide to Picual olive oil explains why. The producer's tasting notes for Ecológico Day mention green grass, banana skin and apple, with "a slight bitterness and pungency". Arbequina Premium is the gentler bottle, described as delicate, with green apple, banana and green almond; our piece on the Arbequina olive covers that variety. The children's oil is built the same way on purpose — mostly mild, sweet Arbequina, with a little Picual for stability.

A note on the names, because they confuse shoppers. "Ecológico Day" and "Ecológico Night" are sold abroad as Organic Day and Organic Night, and you will also see them written Eco Day and Eco Night. They are the same two oils.

How Nobleza del Sur Makes Its Oil

The producer's account of its method is short and specific. In the field, it describes regular soil and leaf analysis and close control of the trees' growth. At harvest, it says it selects only olives at their optimum point of ripeness and processes them at "very low temperature".

The product pages add the numbers that matter most:

  • Time to the mill. "Extracción en frío. Máximo 4 horas desde la recolección del fruto" — cold extraction, at most four hours from picking. The mill sits among the family's own groves, which is what makes that window possible.
  • Yield. Between 10 and 14 kg of olives for one litre of Ecológico Day or Arbequina Premium, and 8 to 10 kg for the children's oil. A high ratio like this usually means fruit picked green, before it has filled with oil.
  • Timing. The two Ecológico oils are labelled cosecha temprana – octubre: early harvest, October. NOVO is described as the first extra virgin of the year from a selected plot — the kind of new-season oil Italians call olio nuovo. Our guide to early harvest olive oil explains the trade-off between yield and flavour.
  • Acidity. The pages give approximate free acidity of 0.1° for Ecológico Day and 0.2° for Arbequina Premium. The legal ceiling for extra virgin is 0.8%, so these are very low figures — with the honest caveat that they are approximate figures on a product page, not a certificate for a specific batch.

None of this is unusual for the top tier of Spanish producers. It is, however, exactly the right list of things to control, and Nobleza del Sur writes it down.

What the Nobleza del Sur Awards Do and Don't Tell You

The producer's awards page lists results every year from 2011 to 2026. The recent highlights, as it records them:

  • NYIOOC (New York International Olive Oil Competition) Gold Award for Ecológico Day in 2024 and 2025, and Best in Class for Eco Day in 2019 and for Centenarium Premium in 2018.
  • 99/100 for the house's oils in the Flos Olei guide's 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 editions, and Flos Olei 2021's best extra virgin olive oil of the year from organic farming.
  • BIOL, an international competition for organic oils: Extra Gold for Ecológico Day in 2025, and Gold for Ecológico Day and Night in 2026.
  • EVOOLEUM: second-best extra virgin olive oil in the world in its 2016 edition, and best Arbequina in 2017.
  • Expoliva 2026: a listing for Ecológico Day in an organic-production category, and Tradición 1640 Picual as a finalist for conventional or integrated production.

Here is the honest caveat. Producers enter competitions, and pay to, so a medal table tells you which oils were entered as well as which were good. What a record like this does show is consistency: many different panels, in different countries, in different years, keep reaching the same verdict, particularly about Ecológico Day. That is hard to manufacture.

What awards don't tell you is anything about the bottle in your hand. An award belongs to a harvest. Check the harvest year printed on the bottle, and buy the current season. Our guide to choosing a quality olive oil sets out the full label checklist.

Three Fair Objections

"Isn't this just another medal-wall marketing story?" Partly, as above — awards are entered. But the substance underneath is checkable: a named mill, named farms, a stated variety for each bottle, a stated time from tree to press. Those are claims a buyer can hold the producer to, which is more than most brands offer.

"300 hectares in Jaén is not a boutique grove." True. Jaén is the most concentrated olive-growing landscape in the world, and Nobleza del Sur is a substantial farming business inside it, not a smallholding. The producer also says each oil comes from a different grove with its own soil — so "single estate" here means one family's estates, with several farms behind the range.

"You don't publish acidity or polyphenol figures yourselves." Correct, and we will not talk around it. Our current batch has not yet been analysed by an independent laboratory, so we have no figure to publish and will not imply one. Nobleza del Sur at least prints approximate acidity on its product pages. When our batch is tested, the result goes up, whatever it says.

Where Nobleza del Sur Is Ahead of Us

We are not going to review a producer like this and pretend the comparison is close on every point. Its organic lines are sold as organic — in Spain the words ecológico and bio on food are reserved for certified organic production — and we do not yet hold an organic certificate. It has a mill on its own land, a choice of varieties and styles, and fifteen years of independent competition results. It prints an approximate acidity figure for several oils; we have no laboratory figure yet.

What we do differently is narrower, not better: one small farm, one oil, rain-fed, cold-pressed within hours and bottled unfiltered.

Why Sidr & Stone

Nobleza del Sur shows what an olive oil label can say when the people selling it also grow it. Sidr & Stone's olive oil works from the same principle at a much smaller scale — one farm, named — and everything below describes how it is grown and made rather than a laboratory figure, because we do not have one yet.

  • Sidr & Stone's extra virgin olive oil comes from a single estate — our own family-owned farm near Marrakech, Morocco — and we control every step from tree to bottle, with no blending across origins.
  • The Sidr & Stone grove is rain-fed, with no irrigation; the trees take what the season gives.
  • Sidr & Stone's olives are organically grown, with no synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides (not yet certified; certification is in progress).
  • Each Sidr & Stone release is a small, limited single-harvest batch; once it is gone, it is gone until the next harvest.
  • Sidr & Stone's oil is cold-pressed within hours of harvest to protect flavour, aroma and polyphenols.
  • It is unfiltered extra virgin, minimally processed, and may show a little natural sediment — normal in an unfiltered oil.
  • It is 100% natural — a single ingredient, olive oil, with no additives — in a 500ml dark glass bottle that protects it from light.
  • Sidr & Stone gives 10% of profits to charity, with fulfilment in the UK, EU, and US.

We will not tell you Sidr & Stone is a better olive oil than Nobleza del Sur — an award-winning early-harvest Picual from a family that grows and mills its own fruit is an excellent oil, and its organic lines carry a certified status that ours does not yet have. What we will say is that ours is single-estate Moroccan, rain-fed, organically grown and cold-pressed within hours of harvest, and that the harvest details for the current batch are on the product page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nobleza del Sur olive oil?

It is a range of Spanish extra virgin olive oils made by Aceites Castellar S.L. from olives grown on the Peñuelas-Sagra family's own farms in Jaén, Andalusia, and pressed at the family's mill in Castellar. The best-known bottles are Ecológico Day, Ecológico Night and Centenarium Premium.

Why does Nobleza del Sur win so many awards?

Its own pages point to the reasons: early-harvested fruit from its own groves, cold extraction within four hours of picking, and low processing temperatures. Panels such as NYIOOC and Flos Olei have rated its oils highly across many years.

What is the difference between Nobleza del Sur Day and Night?

Ecológico Day is 100% Picual from Finca Vista Alegre — green, herbaceous, with some bitterness and pungency. Ecológico Night is a multi-variety coupage from selected plots, described as fruity, sweet and harmonious. Both are organic and early harvest.

Is Nobleza del Sur olive oil organic?

Part of the range is. Ecológico Day, Ecológico Night, Tradición 1640 Orgánico and Only for Children Bio are sold as organic; Centenarium Premium, Arbequina Premium, NOVO and Reserva Familiar are not sold as organic. If certification matters to you, look for the EU organic leaf on the bottle.

How does Nobleza del Sur compare with Sidr & Stone?

They are different kinds of producer. Nobleza del Sur offers a multi-variety Jaén range from 300-plus hectares, with organic lines and a long award record. Sidr & Stone makes one single-estate, rain-fed, unfiltered extra virgin from our own farm outside Marrakech, and has no lab figures or awards yet.

Which Nobleza del Sur oil should I choose?

For a bold, green Picual to finish dishes, Ecológico Day or Centenarium Premium. For something milder and sweeter, Arbequina Premium or Ecológico Night. NOVO is the new-season bottle, best bought and used fresh.

Where can I buy Nobleza del Sur, and where can I buy Sidr & Stone?

Nobleza del Sur sells through its own online shop and through specialist retailers in Europe and the United States; check the harvest year on whichever bottle you buy. Sidr & Stone's oil is sold directly from our product page, with fulfilment in the UK, EU, and US.

Is olive oil a medicine?

No. Olive oil is a food, not a medicine. It has a long traditional history — including being honoured in the Prophetic Sunnah — and a substantial body of modern research, particularly around polyphenols, cardiovascular health, and the Mediterranean diet pattern. It can be a worthwhile part of a healthy routine, but it does not cure diseases and is not a substitute for medical care. Be cautious of any olive oil marketed with specific disease-cure claims.

Final Thoughts

Nobleza del Sur is a good example of a Jaén family estate doing the important things and writing them down. The family grows its own olives, presses them in its own mill within four hours, picks the Ecológico oils early, names the variety and the farm on each product page, and has been judged well by strangers for fifteen years. Those are real strengths, and we are happy to say so.

The usual cautions still apply. An award belongs to a harvest, not a brand, so read the harvest year. And choose by variety: a Picual and an Arbequina from the same family are genuinely different oils. If you are comparing Spanish producers, our guide to Spanish olive oil sets out the wider picture, our piece on what the organic label really means explains the certificate, and our olive oil brands A–Z maps the rest of the shelf.
