If you have found a bottle labelled African black seed oil, you have been given a fact and an impression at the same time. The fact is real: Africa is one of the oldest and largest growing areas for Nigella sativa. The impression — that "African" identifies a particular kind of oil, the way "Kalamata" identifies a particular olive — is where it falls apart. Africa spans Morocco to Ethiopia, and the published measurements of seed from different African countries differ by more than a factor of two. This article sets out where black seed is actually grown across the continent, what the comparative analyses found, and what the word on the label can honestly tell you.

- Altitude and growing conditions matter more than the national border. Ethiopian black cumin is largely a highland crop grown between about 1,500 and 2,500 metres, and Ethiopian Nigella sativa includes a distinct high-thymoquinone chemotype.
- Beware two different percentages. Some studies report thymoquinone as a share of the oil's volatile fraction, which produces figures in the twenties and thirties. That is not the percentage of the bottle, and the two are routinely confused.

What "African Black Seed Oil" Usually Means

None of those uses is dishonest in itself. But only the first tells you anything about the oil, and even then it tells you less than most buyers assume.

Where Black Seed Actually Grows in Africa
Nigella sativa belongs to a subtropical belt running from Morocco eastwards to northern India. Within Africa, that belt covers a genuinely wide range of climates, and the crop is grown under quite different conditions in each.

The Ethiopian growing conditions are worth stating precisely, because they are the reason origin comes up at all in this category. Black cumin there is grown as a rain-fed highland crop with modest annual rainfall and average temperatures in the low teens to around twenty degrees — cool, high and dry, which is a very different environment from irrigated Nile valley farmland.

What the Measurements Actually Show
The most useful thing about this category is that somebody has already done the comparison. A multi-country analysis by Al-Saleh and colleagues, published in 2006, measured thymoquinone and thymol in black cumin seed from five origins. The figures are worth reading carefully, because two of the five are African and they sit at opposite ends of the range.

Read the first and last rows together. Ethiopian and Sudanese seed are both African, and the Ethiopian figure is roughly 2.4 times the Sudanese one. Meanwhile Indian and Saudi seed — neither African — both measured above the Sudanese sample. Whatever "African" is doing on a label, it is not sorting the strong oils from the weak ones.
A separate comparison of Egyptian, Ethiopian and Syrian black cumin oils found the same directional result, with the Ethiopian sample carrying the largest thymoquinone share of the three. The Percentage Trap: Two Numbers That Look Alike
This is where a lot of origin marketing goes wrong, and it is worth understanding before you compare any two bottles.
Some studies report thymoquinone as a proportion of the oil's volatile fraction — the aromatic portion isolated for gas-chromatographic analysis. In the Egyptian, Ethiopian and Syrian comparison, thymoquinone made up around 34.8% of that fraction in the Ethiopian sample. That is a real, correctly reported figure, and it is not the percentage of the bottle. The volatile fraction is a small part of a whole pressed oil, which is overwhelmingly fatty acids.
A genuine cold-pressed black seed oil sits in the low single-digit percentage range for thymoquinone measured against the whole oil. So when one label says 30-something per cent and another says 2.67%, they are very often not disagreeing at all — they are quoting different denominators. Isn't This Just an Argument for Your Own Oil?
